Codetch 0.4.0 [20061026] Released!

The newest/most stable version of Codetch adds smooth Firefox 2 compatibility, as well as tab groups, welcome screen, context menus, view toggling and orientating, and file tree enhancements. More on these improvements later, as well as what went on under the hood. But for now, download away! (Edit: I just love Firefox 2’s new spell checking feature : )

Translations need to be updated! I have posted information for potential translators on the wiki, and have some others to contact.

Is it possible to polish the tabs? On Ubuntu 6.10 Linux, using the Murrina Engine, along with the theme (MurrinaGraphite), tabs in Firefox 2 look great! Unfortunately, the tabs inside Codetch need some polish :(

is it possible to polish the tabs? I created a screenshot to show the difference between Firefox 2 and Codetch here: http://avinux.com/3rdparty/random/Firefox2,%20Codetch%20.4.0%20Tab%20Comparison.png The above tab bar is Codetch, the one below is Firefox 2.

I see syntax highlighting is in the works and this is very much appreciated! I just found Codetch and am very impressed with it so far. For the first time I found a split view editor and I think it is coming along just great! Thank you for your time!

  2. Zach Says:

Hmm, actually those stylish tabs are part of Firefox 2’s new default theme. But only the tabs in the main browser window have this style applied. I’m glad you like the editor though, thanks!

  3. Andrew Says:

Victor B. Gonzalez, you said that syntax highlighting is working. Where can I enable it, I cannot found : (

No, not working yet, but in the works. ;)

I’m using Codetch, and I like it. Just wanted to let you know that “find” and “replace” don’t seem to be working. Also, when you open Codetch as a tab, the files last worked on open as well (great!), but there is no way to close them because the “close” button is greyed out (not so good). Opening a different file activates the button. I’m using Firefox 1.5.0.8, I’m wondering if these bugs are fixed in 2.0? Also, I’m a little worried and security issues using this software. Should I be? Thanks for your time and effort, and keep up the good work.

  6. Zach Says:

Randy, while find and replace are working, there does seem to be a glitch (that I didn’t catch) where “find” doesn’t highlite the next found term. Not sure when that became broken, hmm. I’m not experiencing those bugs in Firefox 2.0, so they may in fact be corrected. As far as security goes, the latest version of Firefox should have more security holes patched up. And the more secure Firefox is, the more secure Codetch is. In fact, the issue with the close button not being highlited is due to some security restrictions of files opened in Firefox’s tabbed browser, as opposed to within their own window. There are no security threats formed by using Codetch that I’m aware of, or could perceive. Thanks Randy.

Looks neat. Tried to install it and it seems to work, but no edit window! If I load a file I see nothing, but an external preview shows what I expect, so it can find the file. Boat load of errors on loading including:

Error: uncaught exception: Permission denied to get property ChromeWindow.location

    Any ideas?

  8. Al Williams Says:

Oddly enough, now it is working for no apparent reason ;-)

    Nicely done though. Very slick.

  9. Botond Szasz Says:

Codetch is a gorgeous and very nice editor. I just tried out the new version with Firefox 2.0 on Win and I’m experiencing a huge problem: there is no way to edit files. It doesn’t matter if I open an already made html file or I just want to create one from scratch, the editor area remains white with no cursor in it and no possible way to write a single letter. If I change to preview mode the area changes color to gray, but still nothing to show. Prior versions with Firefox 1.5.x.x worked like they should. There is a bug somewhere, or maybe there are compatibility issues with other extensions. Anyway, this editor would be the best out of any other Linux HTML editors with its split-view interface and “Dreamweaver-ish” workflow-style. Thanks for your work put in this project so far and keep doing so in the future because it worths!

  10. Zach Says:

Thanks Botond! Send error messages if you can.

  11. Jeff McNeill Says:

I have the same problem as Botond. I get no actual errors, but the edit window stays white. I can type there and click on view in browser, and see the text just fine, but in the edit window, no go. I am on Firefox 2.0.0.1

Cheers and thx for the great app!

    Aloha,
    Jeff Mcneill

    Hey,

I’m new to WYSIWYG HTML editors. I assumed a benefit of the reference panel was that you could copy + paste from it to the code view and get the underlying code. If Codetch already does it great–but it’s not working for me!

    Thanks, emailkay

  13. Dan Says:

    Hi,

Impressive stuff, would really like to see this develop into a full featured editor that competes with / supercedes Dreamweaver.. I’ve been using Dreamweaver since v1, but I’m a big supporter of open-source projects and think that codetch could be an amazing tool for startup developers and advanced developers who can contribute to your efforts to add new features.

Keep up the good work, it’s a very exciting project.

P.S. Bring on the syntax highlighting!! :)

    Dan

  14. Zach Says:

Thanks a bunch Dan! That’s my motivation as well.

Maybe this is a stupid question but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to re-implement a menu that is default on ff2 on Tiger macTel.

I deactivated by pressing on the “x” but setting user set related preferences in about:config, uninstalling/reinstalling the extesion, removing the codetch folder in /Profiles/…/, and preference file within the extensions folder without getting back that set of menu options.

I’ve looked into the remaining menu settings, including the Preferences selection, if this is not obvious.

    Chascon

PS-I refer to a menu that is similar to the results one that is on the bottom.

Any plan to add ‘word wrap’ view in Code panel?

This is really a great stuff for quick editor!

    Thanks,

Is it just me/mycomputer or is the layout of Codetch awful? I see:
    the normal title bar
    the normal menu bar
A grey bar “Insert” plus a down arrow
    3 tabs common, text, paragraph
When I started a huge toolbar, that turned into a toolbar that is too small to see the icons, after clicking the roll up arrow on the insert bar.
Then another toolbar, also extremely huge, that can be turned off under the view menu. But that same menu holds a third huge toolbar called.
I’m currently no longer able to restore the insert toolbat to its initial huge size but when it still was huge, less than half the window was available for editing…in full screen mode. Initially it opened in abouit half screen window, leaving NO editing space whatsoever. It took me a while to figure out how to get rid of these toolbars. I would have prefered to use this time learning how to edit pages with codetch. I still believe that it’s potentially powerful, but not good looking and I find the learning curve steeper than I expected.

Just wanted to say - love Codetch, just installed it, there was just one issue - wanted to have a split view (Firefox 2, Win XP) but unfortunately it said nowhere “split view” — turns out, by right-clicking “Code” and “Design” tabs, they will be pressed simultaneously and THEN you get a split screen !! :) Wish this was a bit more obvious, but otherwise… LOVE IT :) :) :)

  19. Chascon Says:

Yeah, some things are not obvious, such as the x buttons on the far right to me make me think of closing tabs not menus. That’s why I ended up with these menus missing, and it’s not the first time.

I really wish I could get these menus back to explore cCdetch. The first time it happened I emailed one of the coders but never received a response. I know this is probably done on free time so I wouldn’t expect responses to every email so this is why I posted here, where there is supposed to be coder user interaction.

If there is no response I can only assume that there is no way of getting these menus back therefore this would be a bug. I guess I could list it as one with the appropriate bug tracker software.

  20. Zach Says:

Hey Chascon, I posted a reply here http://blog.codetch.com/2005/09/06/codetch-035-release/#comment-8759

Thanks for the feedback, it doesn’t go unheard. :)
